5 Atmospheric Christmas Markets in Copenhagen

What a beautiful Christmas city Copenhagen really is! With atmospheric Christmas markets, stunning seasonal lights and Christmas decorations all over the city, Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, truly brought me into the real Christmas mood last weekend. In Copenhagen it is impossible not to find the spirit for the Christmas holiday season.copenhagen_christmasmarketcopenhagen_christmasmarketThe best places to soak up Christmas spirit are Copenhagen’s many Christmas markets. Last weekend when I visited Copenhagen, I went on an evening stroll in the city centre and found some very magical Christmas markets, charming Christmas villages and winter wonderlands along the way.copenhagen_christmasmarketcopenhagen_christmasmarket

1. Christmas Market at Tivoli Gardens

During the Christmas season Copenhagen’s historical amusement park Tivoli Gardens is decorated with myriads of festive fairy lights, Christmas trees and fake snow creating a magical Christmas wonderland (19 Nov–31 Dec 2016). Colourful little huts sell everything from Christmas decorations, gift items and handicrafts to sweets, cookies, hot and cold drinks. The atmosphere at Tivoli is straight out of a storybook making it the most magical Christmas market I have ever experienced in my life. You can read the post on my Magical Evening at Tivoli here.

2. Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market at Axeltorv

Right across the road from Tivoli at Axeltorv Square, the Christmas market (18 Nov–22 Dec 2016) named after the famous Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen offers a fairytale like atmosphere with beautiful Christmas lights and a nostalgic carousel.

3. Christmas Market at Højbro Plads

The Christmas Market at Højbro Plads (18 Nov–23 Dec 2016) surrounded by historical houses and striking towers is a charming little Christmas village with reindeer and Santa’s sleigh, secret pixies, Christmas trees and sparkling festive lights. Here you have a chance to meet Father Christmas and have a photo taken with him.

4. Christmas Market at Kongens Nytorv

Another charming Christmas market in the very heart of Copenhagen is at Kongens Nytorv between Nyhavn harbour and the pedestrian walkway of Strøget (18 Nov–22 Dec 2016). Here you get to absorb Christmas spirit while admiring the stunning Christmas decorations of Hotel D’Angleterre.

5. Christmas Market in Nyhavn Harbour

One of the most picturesque Christmas markets of Copenhagen takes place in the idyllic old harbour of Nyhavn (11 Nov–23 Dec 2016) right by the iconic colourful houses along the canal. Colourful houses and stalls are decorated with garlands and festive lights. Here sugar roasted almonds and mulled wine fill the air.

    • Thank you for your kind comments. Yes, Copenhagen is a very magical Christmas city, I did not expect it to be so charming during the darkest time of the year. I was completely blown away how well Copenhagen treated me.
